A National Health Service Demonstration was held on 18 May, 2013. A coachload of Brighton protesters left the Old Steine for London to support the cause.
Protesters assembled at the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank at midday for this lively and enthusiastic protest against the privatisation of our hospitals. From there, the plan was to march over the bridge, left along the Strand, then down Whitehall to the huge black iron gates of Downing Street.
There were plenty of catchy slogans, along the lines of... "No more ifs, no more buts / No more public sector cuts." There were plenty of banners bearing insults: "Time to Wake Up to this Evil Government."
The usual detractors also put in an appearance: And, to be honest, we would have missed the Christians if they hadn't turned up. Their placard read: "Christ is coming soon to cure the sick." So that's all right then! We might as well all go home...Speakers galore, although no one from Brighton took the stand. But we made plenty of noise.
The general consensus was that the march had been a tremendous success, but it needed to spread its wings and extend itself from the regional to a nationwide onslaught. If the 18 May demo was anything to go by for energy, determination and grit, imagine what could be achieved?
